Google's local ranking system uses three documented signals: relevance, distance, and prominence. Distance is the straight line between the searcher and the registered business location. In Wellington, where the CBD is six to seven kilometres from suburbs like Karori, Newtown, and Khandallah, that distance signal punches above its weight because every suburb is within a short drive of the centre but Google still treats them as distinct ranking zones.
The result: a service business registered at a Wellington Central or Te Aro postcode tends to rank well for CBD searches and weaker for suburban ones. Auckland businesses get away with a single registered address ranking across many suburbs because the city's geography is more spread out and the proximity signal has more spatial room to breathe.

Three things to fix on a Wellington listing
1. Register at the address you actually operate from
If you run the business from a home office in Karori or Khandallah, register the Google Business Profile there. Use a service area listing if you do not want the address visible publicly. Google explicitly supports service area businesses and does not penalise the practice.
2. Scripted review requests that mention the suburb
Reviews are part of the prominence signal. Reviews that mention specific suburbs read by Google as topical signals for those suburbs. Sending customers a one line script (a brief note on the job and the suburb) tends to produce more useful reviews than a generic ask.
3. Service area set to areas you can genuinely serve
Google Business Profile lets you list a service area. Setting this to the entire Wellington region is technically allowed but sends a weaker signal than setting it to the three or four sub regions you actually drive to. Wellington City, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt, Porirua, and Kapiti Coast are treated as separate sub markets by Google.
If you run a Wellington service business from the CBD address that is not where your customers are, Google's distance factor is silently capping how often you appear in suburb searches. Moving the registered address to where you really operate is a one afternoon fix.
If you want help auditing the Google Business Profile setup for a Wellington business, the strategy call covers it. We will look at the address, the service area, the review pattern, and the closest competitors live.
